The statistics are staggering . . .



The statistics of harassment and discrimination on campus have continued to increase. The follow statistics are from a study done by the AAUW Educational Foundation. There has been a significant rise in sexual harassment against men and women (AAUW2011).


Reports of sexual harassment at their university

  • 62%  - Female college students
  • 61% -  Male college students

Know someone personally who has been harassed

  • 66% of college students
  • 10% -  Students reported the harassment resulted from a university employee

Sexual harassment cases not reported

  • 35% - Cases of Harassment that was not reported by students

Harassment by another student

  • 80% of students who experienced sexual harassment

Violence on campus is a serious issue. Hate crimes are usually instigated from disagreements among racial, gender, religion, sexual preference, or disability discrimination. Campuses have worked to develop a proactive position to present issues from occurring; however, it is impossible to stop the actions. ABC Community College has established an emergency plan to educate staff in the event of an incident. This training was designed to educate staff and students on the preventative measures that can be taken.

1 in 4 students experience some form of harassment

Harassment and discrimination comes in many forms. Employees and faculty are not excluded from the experience of harassment and discrimination. The incidents may occur between managers and employees, faculty and students, or students to students.

A telephone pole of 782 workers conducted by Louis Harris and Associates found the following results:       


Reports of workplace harassment

  • 31%  -  Women reported some form of harassment at work
  • 7%    -  Men reported some form of harassment
  • 100% - Women reported the harassment came from a man
  • 59% - Men reported the harassment came from a woman
  • 62% - Reported that no action was taken
  • 43% - Reported that the harassment came from a supervisor
